The Bay Area has long been recognized as one of the most important financial and commercial regions in the world. Its intrinsic qualities include a strong multi-faceted economy, strategic access to Pacific Rim, a significant presence in financial markets, and thriving tourist trade. The region offers an attractive quality of life, dynamic business environment, unparalleled transportation infrastructure, and one of the most educated populations in the world.
The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the world's leading centers for international commerce. More than 70 foreign consulates and trade offices work to support trade with local companies. San Francisco's geographic location provides an important link to fast growing markets in Asia and Latin America, as well as to dynamic markets in Europe and Canada. The Bay Area's long-standing cultural and commercial ties with Asia and its diverse Asian population are critical components to maintaining San Francisco as the true getaway to the Pacific. San Francisco's ethnically diverse population enables the region to enjoy a formidable position in the global marketplace.

Regional Transportation
The Bay Area benefits from a major transportation network serving all surrounding counties. An infrastructure of trains, light rail, buses, and ferries provide convenient public transportation. In addition, the San Francisco Bay Area is home to three international airports:
San Francisco International,
Oakland International, and
San Jose International.
The Bay Area's ports are responsible for 45% of California's exports representing more than $48 billion in exported merchandise to foreign markets. The San Francisco Bay Area is home to a number of deep-water ports, the two largest being Oakland and San Francisco.
The Port of Oakland is used primarily as a containerized cargo destination facility and is the largest Bay Area port, loading and discharging more than 98% of containerized goods moving through Northern California.
The Port of San Francisco is operational but has, more recently, focused on tourism uses. A major revitalization and modernization effort is underway to enhance its appeal as a shipping point, passenger ship destination, and tourist attraction.
The Port of Richmond is northern California's most diversified cargo handler. With its roots in petroleum and liquid bulk cargos, Richmond has expanded its dry bulk, break bulk, and containerized cargo handling capabilities and has increased its automobile processing facilities. Today Richmond ranks #1 in liquid bulk automobile tonnage among ports on San Francisco Bay.
